What’s On TV Tonight ~ Friday 3rd October
Thank Crunchie it’s Friday, and again, there’s some great telly tonight with many of the best shows on at 9pm. Here’s a look at what we recommend you watch tonight…
An Island Parish, BBC2, 7.30pm ~ It’s Easter on the Isles of Scilly, and traditionally the start of the holiday season, but the islanders hold their breath to see how much the credit crunch will affect their livelihoods. Meanwhile, it’s time to say goodbye to a much-loved figure, Bishop Bill, the Bishop of Truro. The locals turn out in force as the Rev’d David blesses the little rowing boat which they hope will carry the Scilly Boys safely home during their epic voyage from America.
Coronation Street, ITV1, 7.30pm ~ It’s a bad time to be Liam this weekend as the dastardly Tony invites him on a walk in local caves leaving his lover Carla and oblivious wife Maria at the hotel’s spa. Elsewhere, as the police investigate the lottery win, Sally and Kevin’s questions send Janice into a panic but Leanne still has her heart set on using the money to buy the bookies and Jason’s in turmoil over Sarah’s possible return.
Britain’s Whitest Family, Channel 4, 7.35pm ~ This fascinating documentary focuses on three people who have albinism. All are from different families but each of their families contain several members with the same condition. Featuring Haider, 25, who’s one of six albino siblings and the son of two albino parents from Pakistan, Ayo, 16, who has education attainment problems and Joey, 15, who’s been bullied throughout his life but finds solace in music. Part of the First Cut strand and Generation Next season.
Esther vs the PC Brigade: Tonight, ITV1, 8pm ~ ChildLine founder and TV presenter Esther Rantzen investigates whether political correctness has gone too far and is now putting children at risk by creating an ‘atmosphere of suspicion’. She asks why it is that adults such as relatives and teachers, who ought to be a source of security for children, are seen as threatening. Esther was on GMTV this morning talking about this programme, and part of it included putting a hidden-camera in a shopping centre where the programme placed – at different times – a boy and a girl of about eight who appeared to be in some distress. It’s alarming how many people actively avoided helping these children, but why?
Brainiac: Science Abuse, BBC3, 8pm ~ This is a very funny show looking at the lighter side of science and the team carry out some fabulously stupid experiments. Tonight, ex-BB housemate and self-confessed geek Jon Tickle and comedian Vic Reeves are joined by Thaila Zucchi, who presents a regular segment How Hard Is Your Thing? in which she puts viewers submissions through a series of intense tests to find the hardest object in the land. I’d send Ross Kemp in!
Most Annoying Couples, BBC3, 8pm ~ Countdown from 100 of celebrities whose relationships have come under the media spotlight and got on our collective nerves. Tonight takes a look at Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil and Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin. The show also features a humorous look at why so many people become obsessed with the ups and downs of the stars’ romances.
Ugly Betty, Channel 4, 9pm ~ Burning Questions: Renee sets up a rivalry with Betty after becoming convinced that she’s in love with Daniel while Gina returns to Queens to make Hilda jealous of her new life and rich husband. Another episode follows this one.
The Tudors, BBC2, 9pm ~ In the last of the series, we see that Anne Boleyn is imprisoned in the Tower awaiting her execution, but it’s delayed by the executioner’s late arrival. Well, he’s a man, so obviously he won’t be on time. Meanwhile, the King declares his union to the Queen null and void, denying their daughter Elizabeth any claim to the throne. Henry visits Jane Seymour to ask for her hand in marriage, hoping the union will give him a male heir.
Wire In The Blood, ITV1, 9pm ~ Falls the Shadow – Part Two: After another colleague is murdered, Dr Tony Hill is arrested as prime suspect so with time to ponder the ritualistic nature of the attacks, he finally finds a link with the prostitute killings. Alex refuses to let him offer himself as bait to lure the perpetrator into the open, not realising he’s already a target. Eeeek.
Little Britain USA, BBC1, 9.30pm ~ Matt Lucas and David Walliams take their sketch show stateside for this new series featuring a few old characters, transplanted to America, as well as a host of new creations. They include Bing Gordyn, the eighth astronaut to fly to the moon, muscle-bound gym buddies Mark and Tom, indiscreet grandmother Mildred, and little girl Ellie-Grace who’s as sweet as pie – until she opens her mouth. Guest starring Rosie O’Donnell, Harry Lennix and Ann Cusack.
The Fly, E4, 10.35pm ~ David Cronenberg’s gruesome remake of the Fifties horror classic, starring Jeff Goldblum as a scientist whose experiments with matter transportation lead to tragedy and some awesome – if gory – acting as he becomes his own experiment. Also stars Geena Davis, John Getz and Joy Boushel.
Couples Who Kill, Discovery, 11pm ~ Mother Knows Best: Documentary series about murderous partnerships which tonight looks at the case of a mother and son team of con artists and suspected murderers who are eventually caught by a complex sting operation that included the LAPD, NYPD and the FBI.
Whatever you’re doing tonight, have a good one and we’ll see you tomorrow!
