What’s On TV Tonight – Saturday 4th October
Can you believe it’s Saturday again? It doesn’t feel like a week since we last had one, but sure enough, it has been! So tonight’s the battle of the reality shows again as X Factor and Strictly overlap but there are some great films and documentaries on too so you’ll be spoiled for choice tonight.
Mrs Doubtfire, Channel 4, 5.15pm ~ This fabulously funny film – adapted from Anne Fine’s book ‘Alias Madame Doubtfire’ – has an excellent cast that includes Robin Williams, Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan as the grown-ups who are engaged in bitter rivalry following Robin and Sally’s character’s marriage breakdown. Robin assumes the guise of Scottish nanny Mrs Doubtfire so that he can spend more time with his children, however, he soon becomes an invaluable member of the household and in some hilarious scenes, he tries to put off would-be suitor Pierce in his attempt to woo his ex-wife. It’s well worth watching even if, like me, you’ve seen it a dozen times!
Merlin, BBC1, 6pm ~ The Mark of Nimueh: Tonight, a witch poisons Camelot’s water supply, sending a terrible sickness through the kingdom. Merlin ignores Gaius’s warnings against practising magic and uses it to alleviate Gwen’s father’s illness, but his actions put the girl’s life in danger. Michelle Ryan guest stars alongside Colin Morgan.
Strictly Come Dancing, BBC1, 6.45pm ~ Brucie and Tess Daly preside over the third live show in which the remaining seven male celebrities and their professional partners dance either a jive or a tango to stay in the competition. Judges Arlene Phillips, Len Goodman, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli cast a professional eye over their performances, while the female celebrities show off their skills in a group dance. The results show is tomorrow at 8.10pm.
All Star Family Fortunes, ITV1, 7pm ~ Tonight, the star teams are headed up by former England rugby union player Will Greenwood and ex Blue singer Duncan James. Both teams hope their answers to will carry them through to the final round and the chance to win £30,000 for their chosen charities. Hosted by the gorgeous Vernon Kay, this show doesn’t require any thinking about and is just a pleasant way to fill the gap while you’re waiting for X Factor! Speaking of which…
Lark Rise To Candleford, BBC3, 7pm ~ If reality TV isn’t for you, you might enjoy another chance to watch the excellent BBC drama adaptation by Bill Gallagher of Flora Thompson’s classic memoir chronicling 19th-century life in Oxfordshire. Young country girl Laura moves leaves her family and friends in Lark Rise to take her first job at the Post Office in the nearby village of Candleford but she soon finds her loyalties tested. Olivia Hallinan, Dawn French and Julia Sawalha star and part two is right after this one.
The X Factor, ITV1, 7.45pm ~ Once again, Strictly overlaps X Factor which is uber annoying, however, in tonight’s show, Dermot O’Leary presents the first of two programmes in which the judges invite the remaining 24 acts to their homes in Barbados, Cannes, St Tropez and Ireland, where the judges will make their final selections.
They judges are each joined by a celebrity expert; Cheryl has called on Girls Aloud bandmate Kimberley Walsh, for Simon it’s Sinitta, Dannii is assisted by Emma Bunton and Louis has Westlife’s Shane Filan. These are the eight people who dictate either the end of the dream or a shot at next week’s live studio rounds for the contestants. Continues tomorrow 6.10pm.
Casualty, BBC1, 8.50pm ~ Face Up: Dixie faces her first day back at work after the accident and struggles to cope when a call to a council estate ends in violence. Zoe copes with the results of her fertility test by going out and getting drunk before knocking herself out in the toilets of a club. Meanwhile, Alice learns more about Curtis.
The Full Monty, E4, 9pm ~ Like Mrs Doubtfire, this film is well worth watching again, and follows the antics of a group of average blokes from Yorkshire as they formulate a money-making scheme which involves shaking their own money-makers! Robert Carlyle stars as the leader of the unlikely striping dance troupe, while Mark Addy, Tom Wilkinson, Hugo Speer and Paul Barber are among those mastering the art of stripping in time to music, not to mention giving their self-esteem a boost into the bargain. Directed by Peter Cattaneo.
The Royle Family: The Queen of Sheba, UKTV Gold, 9pm ~ I know this is becoming a ‘recommended repeats’ WOTV but this gem is again worth watching over and over, but have a large box of tissues at the ready. Nearly seven years have passed since Baby David’s christening, but Jim is still picking his nose and setting the world to rights from his armchair. Nana is now the centre of attention after moving in and Anthony is a successful businessman. Denise is pregnant again and sporting fancy hair extensions, while Cheryl’s still trying to lose weight and looking for love. Caroline Aherne, Craig Cash and Ricky Tomlinson star. Part of Liz Smith night.
Death Row Diaries, UKTV People, 11pm ~ Fascinating – if a tad morbid – documentary examining the final days and hours of criminals put to death in America’s notorious Sing Sing prison between 1891 and 1963. The programme is based around the recently unearthed official records of the men and women who died in Sing Sing’s electric chair, including photographs, final letters written to loved ones, autopsy reports and first hand accounts of the executions by guards and eyewitnesses. Also features interviews, archive video footage and stylised dramatisations.
That’s it for our Saturday recommendations so we’ll see you same time, same place tomorrow for Sunday’s WOTV.
