What’s On TV Tonight – Sunday 5th October

Sundays have become good telly nights lately and this one’s no exception with a great choice of programmes to suit everyone so here are our recommendations for your televisual delight this chilly Sunday…

Dragons’ Den, BBC2, 6pm ~ Business competition series presented by Evan Davis in which innovations and inventions are pitched to the dragons which tonight include an online service for bingo and poker players, an aid for toilet-training young children and an enterprise offering bat dung as a fertiliser for gardeners.

The X Factor, ITV1, 6.10pm ~ Following on from last night’s show, it’s make or break time for the X Factor hopefuls as they find out whether they’ve made the live shows or whether their dream is over and they’re heading home. After their final performance, the agonising wait to find out begins but they aren’t the only ones under pressure as, with only three places in each category, Simon, Dannii, Louis and Cheryl have some big decisions to make. This year’s final 12 will be revealed at the end of the show.

harry-potter

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, ITV1, 7.10pm ~ Premiere of the hugely successful film adaptation of JK Rowling’s book starring Daniel Radcliffe as the adolescent wizard in this fourth installment of the popular series. In this darker, more grown-up adventure, Harry is chosen to represent Hogwarts School in a prestigious magical tournament, but the presence of a feared sorcerer could make things complicated and rather dangerous.

Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Brendan Gleeson and Gary Oldman also star in this film which is going to see lots of parents and kids arguing about staying up until 10pm on a Sunday night to watch it!

Charley Boorman: Ireland to Sydney By Any Means BBC2, 8pm ~ The team’s peaceful ride through Vietnam comes to an abrupt halt when they find themselves on a small speedboat adrift in rough seas. Charley visits a famous site associated with the country’s devastating war, the network of tunnels at Vinh Moc, as well as the largest waterfalls in South Asia. He then dirt bikes in the local countryside and tries wakeboarding across Singapore.

Strictly Come Dancing, BBC1, 8.10pm ~ Results Show: Following last night’s performances by the seven male celebrities, the two couples who received the lowest scores take to the dance floor once again, before the judges decide who to eliminate. There’s also a routine by professionals Flavia Cacace and Vincent Simone.

The Secret Policeman’s Ball 2008, Channel 4, 9pm ~ The biggest comedy event of the year returns to the Albert Hall as Amnesty International host a star-studded night of entertainment and music. Performers include Al Murray, Andrew Maxwell, Chevy Chase, Dylan Moran, Eddie Izzard, Graham Norton, Russell Brand and The Mighty Boosh.

Fringe, Sky One, 9pm ~ Pilot: This is a brand new drama series from Lost creator JJ Abrams which follows a team as they look into unexplained events with paranormal or terrorist connections. FBI agent Olivia Dunham investigates when all passengers on a plane are found dead on arrival in Boston. She joins forces with brilliant but unstable scientist Dr Walter Bishop and his son Peter to discover what really happened on Flight 627. Viewers have a choice of start times. I won’t be missing this one! I’m a Lost addict so I’d watch anything JJ Abrams inspired.

tess-durbeyfield

Tess of the D’Urbervilles, BBC1, 9pm ~ Tonight’s episode is the last in the series. The death of Tess’s father sees her family forced out of their home and Tess again finds herself at the mercy of Alec who offers the Durbeyfields a home and support. Angel returns from Brazil and tracks down his wife, but his visit drives Tess to despair and she lashes out at her benefactor Alec before spending one last night with Angel.

Almost Human with Jane Goodall, Animal Planet, 10pm ~ This fascinating programme looks at the emotional similarities between humans and chimpanzees. Jane Goodall – a world renowned primate expert – searches Tanzania’s Gombe National Park for a chimpanzee that went missing when her baby died and along with various rangers and conservationists, we’re shown how chimps experience emotions such as depression, jealousy, triumph and can even lose the will to live. An amazing documentary.

The South Bank Show, ITV1, 10pm ~ The One Ronnie: Tonight, Ronnie Corbett talks to Melvyn Bragg about modern comedy and takes a film crew around his homes in Scotland and London where he and wife Anne spend their time. Archive material along with contributions from David Frost and Michael Palin chart Ronnie’s career from working with Danny La Rue to his big break in Lionel Bart’s flop musical Twang!, as well as pairing with Ronnie Barker on The Frost Report.

The Boys from Brazil, Discovery Channel, 10pm ~ Ira Levin’s novel about the cloning of Hitler’s body tissue – and so producing identical little boys who might revive the Third Reich – is given the epic treatment here by director Franklin J Schaffner. Masterminding the genetic engineering is the infamous Dr Mengele, played by Gregory Peck while James Mason is his accomplice and Laurence Olivier is the Nazi-hunter modelled on Simon Wiesenthal who tracks them down. This thriller seems more plausible now than it ever was back in the late 1970s when it first appeared and is still as watchable as ever.

That’s all our recommendations for tonight; back to work tomorrow for the start of another week and we’ll be back then too with Monday’s WOTV.
