Ladies and gents, we invite you to place your – virtual – bets on who’s going to snuff it in the third series of Downton Abbey…
The fact that a “key” member of the cast is going to snark it was revealed by the show’s executive producer Rebecca Eaton, who also teased that there’ll be a birth in series three.
However, given that we know Lady Sybil is pregnant, I’m gonna go ahead and predict it’ll be her baby that’s to be born. And maybe poor Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay) will die in childbirth!
It wasn’t an uncommon event in those days after all.
While speaking to The Insider, Eaton said, “Somebody will be born and somebody will die.
“Somebody pretty key in the cast is unfortunately not going to make it.”
Of course another contender for Whose Coffin Is This could be the Dowager Duchess, who is of course played by Maggie Smith. And according to Eaton, the redoubtable Ms Smith is something of a “handful” on set…
She said, “Maggie Smith is a handful, it’s true. She’s very difficult.
“She knows her worth, and she’s tricky on the set, but she delivers when the time comes.”
And as fans will surely know, US acting legend Shirley MacLaine joins the cast in series three as Lady Cora’s (Elizabeth McGovern) mother , and of that, and MacLaine’s scenes with Maggie, Eaton said, “There are some wonderful scenes between Maggie and Shirley MacLaine – Shirley MacLaine being ditsy as ever.
“And Maggie barely restraining her sneer in having to deal with this American.”
The new series of Downton Abbey airs in September on ITV1, but in the meantime, let us know who you think is going to die…
And bear in mind, John Bates (Brendan Coyle) is awaiting news of his fate at the end of his trial, so perhaps he’ll hang!
