Well we’ve got the new Doctor in the form of Matt Smith, so the question now is, who’s going to be his assistant and who do you want it to be?

The current speculation is that given Matt Smith’s a relatively unknown face on our screens, a more established actor is likely to be brought in as his companion. I think it’s safe to assume she’ll be young, like Matt, too.

The current bookmaker’s front runner is Lily Allen and Piers Wenger,

executive producer of the show, told the Telegraph, “We would never cast anyone on the basis of their celebrity, but if Lily wanted to audition we would be delighted. It would be a lot of fun.”

Yeah, assuming you got her on a day she was sober and not stoned.

Wenger added, “Having got the casting of the Doctor out of the way, the companion role is where we will be looking next.

“Someone terribly exciting like Billie Piper, who was at the beginning of her acting career but who had a profile for other reasons, would be great. We are looking for someone whose light can burn brightly.”

The show’s producers are reportedly looking for someone who’s famous for something other than acting. The former Doctor’s assistant, Billie Piper, was best known as a teenage pop singer and the wife of DJ Chris Evans when she got the part, but she proved a big hit with viewers.

Other possible candidates for the job include Rachel Stevens, Kimberley Nixon, Kelly Brook, Michelle Ryan and, oddly, Catherine Zeta Jones.

A number of the show’s fans have expressed their wish that Sally Sparrow – played by Carey Mulligan who starred in the episode ‘Blink’ – becomes the new assistant, but she doesn’t even seem to be on the bookies radar at present.
