Who will be the new Doctor Who?

David Tennant has of course announced that he’s leaving the show so the question we’re asking is, who’s going to be the new Doctor and who do you want it to be?

David was announced as the tenth timelord in April 2005 and made his first appearance in the episode ‘The Parting of the Ways’ following the regeneration scene. He also appeared in a special mini-episode which was shown as part of 2005’s Children in Need appeal.

His first full-length appearance as the Doctor was in an hour long special, ‘The Christmas Invasion’, which aired on Christmas Day in 2005 and his last will be after 4 TV specials in 2009.

He’s been an amazing Doctor and brought much to the role, so who can fill his not insubstantial shoes and become the registered keeper of the Tardis?

Well, speculation is rife that we might get a female Doctor now that David’s leaving, and many are suggesting that Billie Piper could do the role justice. However, the show’s creator, Russell T Davies doesn’t seem to have given that possiblity a great deal of credence.

When asked about the possibility of having a lady timelord, he rather sarcastically commented to The Mirror that, “Amy Winehouse would be a great doctor.” I think what he meant was Amy Winehouse needs a great Doctor… however I digress.

Apparently, one of Davies’ favourites for the role is Russell Tovey, who’s already had a part in the show. He appeared as Midshipman Frame in last year’s Christmas special and in an email written last year, Davies reportedly said, “Tovey is my favourite casting of the lot, because he’s going to be huge, that man.

“He’s amazing. I think I’d make him the 11th doctor.”

However, bookmakers Paddy Power are suggesting that their favourite for the role is Paterson Joseph. He’s got odds of 3-1 and if he does become the next Doctor, he’ll be the first black person in the role.

Paterson has already appeared in two episodes of the show in which he played Roderick alongside David Tennant’s predecessor, Christopher Eccleston.

The star of Cold Feet, James Nesbitt, has been rumoured to be in the frame to become the eleventh timelord as has Life on Mars star John Simm as well as David Morrisey. Paddy Power has given them odds of 8-1 and 5-1 respectively.

Other bookmakers, including Ladbrokes and William Hill, are convinced that David Morrisey will be the next Doctor after he went from being a 33-1 outsider to an odds-on favourite in just a few hours.

There are several contenders though who aren’t even on the radar as far as the bookies are concerned but who fans of the show have suggested for the role. They include Notting Hill star Rhys Ifans, Paul McGann – who incidentally became the Doctor in 1996 in a one off Doctor Who film – and Scots actor Robert Carlyle, who’s said he would “possibly” take on the role. And last but not least, Kelly Brook’s ex, Jason Statham has expressed a tentative interest in the role.

So who do you want to see filling out the V5 and taking possession of the keys to the Tardis? Let us know!

As I’m sure you are now aware, David won’t be leaving the role until the end of 2009. However there won’t be a full season of Dr Who but rather 4 or 5 specials to give David a bigger break between filming so he can start to concentrate on other things. As much as we’d all love to see him continue I think he has made the right decision to help keep the new franchise fresh.
As for the next Dr…. personally I think Matthew Mcfadyen would be absolutely perfect. After recent roles he’s played I can see him as more of a classic styled Dr, a little like the Paul McGann version.
But I rarely get what I want so we’ll just have to wait and see.
