Why Hollyoaks should win big at the British Soap Awards 2012!

The British Soap Awards are but days away, and with the public vote still open to decide which stars take home the awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Sexiest Male, Sexiest Female, Villain Of The Year and Best Soap we thought we would give you a reminder of why each contender was nominated.

The 6 award categories below are open until 3pm on Friday 27th April for you to cast your vote, here are Hollyoaks contenders, and why they have been nominated:

Best soap – Hollyoaks

Hollyoaks bagged two awards last year with Brendan Brady, actor Emmett Scanlan, being their big winner and they will hope to improve on that number this year and prove once and for all they are far more than just a glamorous teen soap with beautiful people.

No doubt the biggest story in Hollyoaks over the last year was the scary Silas serial killer story, which resulted in the gory exits of several female characters including Rae Wilson and Heidi Costello, but that wasn’t the only highlight. Brendan Brady continued to be fearsome, Warren found out he had a son in the shape of Joel, or “Scottish Foxy” as he was described and later made a dramatic exit, Mercedes’ affair with boyfriend Riley’s dad Carl was exposed on their wedding day and both Mercedes and Riley struggled with the arrival of baby Bobby. More recently we discovered poor George is homeless and living rough, meeting new character Phoebe along the way and watching as they narrowly escaped the clutches of evil Deena, whilst we were also in floods of tears as Nancy suffered a devastating miscarriage. Hollyoaks have covered some serious issues over the past year, will they be rewarded?

Sexiest Female – Jorgie Porter (Theresa McQueen)

There’s a bit of a theme with the guys and girls nominated for the sexiest soap stars this year in their Dancing On Ice links. Jorgie took part in the last series along with Emmerdale’s Matthew Wolfenden and proved what a bombshell she is with a series of sexy and elegant performances, with themes ranging from Fame, to dressing up as school girl in a tribute to Britney Spears. Showing off her gorgeous body at every opportunity in different skimpy outfit each week, it’s no surprise that she had all the men drooling after her and picked up enough votes to make it through to this shortlist. In real life she’s going out with co-star James Atherton, which was a case of life imitating art because ditzy blonde Theresa also went out with geeky will, who James plays and It seems the nations men love her just as much as him.

Sexiest Male – Danny Mac (Dodger Savage)

Danny certainly made a big entrance as cockney cheeky chappy Dodger, as his first ever scene was him walking through the streets of  Hollyoaks stripping off as he went! It was obvious from that moment on that the show had yet another new hunk to pose for its calendar of half-naked stars. Since he first arrived it’s fair to say there’s not been many episodes of the soap that haven’t featured him half-naked, they certainly know how to make the most of their assets, and with a body like his, there’s not too many complaints about it either!

Villain of the year- Jeff Rawle (Silas Bissett)

Jeff’s character Silas was up to no good even before we knew who he was! Killing India Longford (Beth Kingston) before we realised that this lethal and heartless killer was none other that Heidi Costello’s (Kim Tiddy) father! It was a big shock, how could this mild-mannered grandad be so evil? But he was, and he continued killing.  He hated promiscuity in women, and anyone who failed to act like a nun was in his firing line, with Rae Wilson (Alice Barlow) next on his hit list after attempts on both Texas Longford(Bianca Hendricks Spendlove) and Theresa McQueens lives. There was one village resident who was on to him though in the shape of Lynsey, but not matter how hard she tried she couldn’t convince anyone that the lovable Grandad was a cold-blooded killer, and Silas was the master of acting the victim. Things eventually did come to a head though, when on Halloween night, during a party, Silas and Lysney had a showdown, and with Silas out for Lynsey’s blood, tragically and shockingly killed his own daughter in a case of mistaken identity. There can be no doubt that Jeff gave one hell of a performance and made the story one of the most gripping and entertaining of the year.

Best Actor – Emmett J Scanalan (Brendan Brady)
Emmett has built up quite a following since joining the show in 2010 and at his first soap awards last year picked up 2 awards. Famous for his impressive tash, the stand out event for Brendan last year was his admission that he was in love with Ste (Keiron Richardson).  In the end it was only when he was faced with the prospect of Ste walking away from him that he dared to say those three little words.  In true soap style their happiness lasted only minutes as they were interrupted in a clinch by Brendan’s estranged wife Eileen and once again his fears about committing himself to a man took over and he denied being in a relationship with Ste.  Brendan spent the latter part of 2011 languishing in prison, a victim of a set up by serial killer Silas. Another big moment was Brendan admitting to his son Declan (Jay Duffy) that he was gay, Declan later showed signs of becoming like his father, resulting in Brendan deciding to send him away to prevent him corrupting his son further. Emmett turned a character that could be the most hated man in Britain into one of the shows most loved characters.

Best Actress – Karen Hassan (Lynsey Nolan)

First seen in spin-off  Hollyoaks Later, there was a campaign to bring Karen’s character into the main show, which sadly didn’t appear to work at first but then out of nowhere it was revealed she’d make a full-time return in the main show. No doubt Lynsey’s biggest story this past year has been her involvement with serial killer Silas Blisset, with Lynsey being the only one in the village to suspect the seemingly docile old man of the villages murders. Karen played the role of a desperate character at her wit’s end perfectly, as Lynsey faced bring called a liar and accused of losing the plot whenever she tried to alert people to the reality of the serial killers actions, even being disowned by best friend Cheryl ( Bronagh Waugh). Karen’s performances as desperate lynsey reached new heights in the dramatic Halloween episodes which saw her confront Silas and the character eventually got redemption when the truth about Silas finally emerged.
