Why I miss Only Fools and Horses

fools & horses

Christmas doesn’t feel quite the same without Only Fools and Horses does it? I miss the adventures of Del and Rodders and even though I’ve been watching previous year’s Christmas specials on GOLD, it’s just not quite the same.

I miss Trigger calling Rodney Dave; remember that time that Trigger said, “If it’s a boy, they’re namin’ him Rodney after Dave”? And in the episode Diamonds Are For Heather, Del uttered the great punch-liner about Uncle Albert’s cooking, “Tough? Tough? It’s the toughest chicken I’ve ever known. It’s asked me for a fight in the car park twice!”

And when his Dad turned up in Thicker Than Water, Del said, “It’s a right blinding Christmas this has turned out to be init. I mean some people get wise men bearing gifts, we get a wally wiv a disease!”

I also miss Boycie and Marlene insulting each other and Denzil getting conned into a scam every year too.

It all started when Only Fools appeared on our screens in 1981. The Christmas special that year was entitled Christmas Crackers, and from then on, the show topped the viewing figure charts every Christmas. Here’s a clip from Christmas Crackers with the boys looking very fresh faced and good old Grandad was still alive…

The last outing for the show was in 2003 in the form of the Christmas special, Sleepless in Peckham which was shown on Christmas Day.

In it, Del Boy and Rodney had only two weeks to find the cash to pay the Inland Revenue bill, or else they’d be evicted from their home in Nelson Mandela House. After 22 years in the flat, it could have been goodbye, but Uncle Albert’s legacy to the boys saved the day! Good old Albert. And Rodney became a dad to baby Joan… ahhhhhhh

Here’s a clip

Another of my favourite Christmas episodes was Heroes and Villains in 1996 in which the boys donned Batman and Robin costumes for a fancy dress party. It turned out they’d actually been invited to a wake and when it said ‘fancy dress’ on the invitation, it meant ‘dress well’!

Here’s a clip from that episode…

Maybe we should start a petition or something to show John Sullivan how much we want to see what the Peckham boys are up to now? If anyone else thinks it’s a good plan, let us know!
