Wonderland, the eclectic, observational documentary series continues this week with Virtual Adultery And Cyberspace Love.
This week’s film is about those people who have become so disillusioned with their real life that they have sidelined it in favour of a virtual one. It’s about people who have cheated on their life partners and risked losing everything for the promise of a life that’s so far only been experienced in the pixels of a computer screen and the dream world of their own fantasies.
Second Life is the online virtual world that’s become a global phenomenon in just three years, and which now boasts three-and-half million residents. Once you have signed up and given your Avatar – your digital identity in the virtual world – anything is “virtually” possible.
Carolyn is a 37-year-old mother of four who feels trapped in the humdrum hell of suburban America. The repetitive nature of her life has had her teetering on the edge of depression – until she discovered Second Life.
Here, you can buy the things you could never afford in real life and have the body and looks of a movie star. Carolyn fell “virtually” in love with the Avatar of a man living 5,000 miles away in the UK. Now, she is planning a visit to meet him because she wants to find out if she is as in love in the real world as she is in the virtual world. All this sounds perfectly reasonable to Carolyn, but less so to her husband, Lee – who is concerned about her real-life responsibilities – and their four children.
